Netflix Announces Castlevania Cartoon for 2017

Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 cartoon due out before end of 2017.

What has been a little known fact for a while was that Castlevania would be getting an animated series.

Castlevania as a series was tentatively shopped for Nickelodeon, but Netflix has picked the series up instead with a release due in 2017.

Little is known about the story other than it will be a cartoon that is going to be “dark and satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head,” according to Adi Shankar, producer for the series.

It is unknown at this time if this Castlevania cartoon will focus on the Belmont family or where exactly in the series timeline these episodes will take place.

The full listing for the series was a blink and you’ll miss it blip on a recent Netflix press release. “Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017,” was all that was shown.

But this isn’t the first time we’ve met a Castlevania character in animated form:

Yes, that’s right. Simon Belmont was totally a tool in the short lived Captain N: The Game Master series by DIC.

This upcoming series that’s being led by the team behind Adventure Time should give fans hope. Also the comment above from Shankar should make fans excited. The last time I saw the vampire sub-genre flipped on its head was this little series about a perky blonde that kicked ass. Even she was going to get an animated treatment.

Could the Castlevania cartoon lead the way for other Nintendo titles to make their way to services such as Netflix? The last two years we’ve heard about a possible Zelda live action series, so we can only hope.
