Mother 3 coming to Wii-U Virtual Console… in Japan only.

For some strange reason, international fans of the Earthbound series get scorned often by its developers. Many know of the characters Nes and Lucas through Super Smash Bros, but not through the games they come from. ┬áCopies of the games are near impossible to get outside of Japan and despite a large following for the popular game, no one really understands why Nintendo doesn’t release the game outside of its country’s borders. And Nintendo Direct’s most recent announcement (or lack thereof for North America) frustrated fans even more.

Although Mother and Earthbound Beginnings were finally released this last year to North America for the Wii U Virtual Console, the final sequel is still being held back. Mother 3, a follow up to Earthbound, is a cult classic Japanese RPG created by HAL Laboratories that was only ever released in Japan in 2006 on the Game Boy Advance. Many North American fans have played a Japanese copy anyways with some helpful translations from fans such as Fobby.net, but it can still prove frustrating. On Nintendo Direct’s recent video announcement for Japan, Nintendo is releasing the title for the Wii U Virtual Console. On top of that, a Lucas Amiibo will shortly follow the game’s release. Nintendo’s Japanese Twitter states the release date will be January 16th. This was never mentioned in the international Nintendo Direct announcements.

So does that mean there is hope to get Mother 3 to the rest of the world? Of course, but the question is long will it take for Nintendo to recognize its new fan base for the series and give in to releasing it outside of Japan? The game was considered a crucial and commercial success in Japan for Nintendo, so why not expand it to the rest of the world? It took them long enough with the first two games, that is for sure. But what can be more frustrating to consider is that if you want the full scoop on Nintendo, listening to just the English Nintendo Direct releases may not give you all you want to know…
